Eco-friendly construction is a major focus

Club Med has always used the features of local architecture to ensure its Resorts blend in with the environment, and the use of local materials means they're well suited to the local climate. Since 2006 it has implemented a Sustainable Building policy (criteria specific to the tourist industry) for all new projects, using green guidelines for all constructions in both cold (mountain) and warm climates.

Sustainability reporting: monitoring progress

The Club's Sustainable Development Division has implemented a reporting system called Tech Care, developed with Invalua using a specific environmental reporting tool (Indicia). Since 2007 this tool has enabled the Club's technical teams to analyse a Resort's consumption reliably and easily, correct unsustainable trends and optimise performance. That means a total of 1,000 metres monitoring consumption of water and energy, often on a daily basis. The Sustainable Development Division has created a new post to manage this monitoring equipment, which it sees as a key element of its environmental policy.

The European Ecolabel

In 2008 Opio-en-Provence was awarded the European Eco Label for tourist accommodation, the first vacation resort to get this award, based on a total of 80 environmental management and performance criteria. It is the only pan-European certification, granted by an independent body. It certifies that a resort is committed to preserving the environment by an efficient management policy for energy, water, waste and site enhancement. Candidates for the award must also strive to raise environmental awareness among staff and clients.

Green Globe 21 program

A number of Club Med's Resorts in America and Asia have begun working towards Green Globe 21 certification. Ixtapa in Mexico has gained Green Globe Silver status, and Columbus (Bahamas) and Cherating Beach (Malaysia) have achieved Bronze Benchmarking status.
Green Globe is originally an Australian system, that has gained wide recognition in Asia and America. It encourages candidates to develop efficiency in environmental management.
