In northeastern South Africa, the Blyde River Canyon reveals itself in all its splendor. Carved into red rock, this natural gem is the third largest canyon in the world. It winds its way between vertiginous cliffs, striking rock formations, and lush forests.

Each viewpoint, God's Window, the Three Rondavels, and the giant potholes of Bourke's Luck Potholes, invites contemplation. This journey to the heart of Mpumalanga promises powerful landscapes, where the light changes every moment. A must-see for any nature lover, to be included in your South Africa travel journal.

Located in the Cape Peninsula National Park, this iconic South African site is often considered the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian oceans. Between coastal trails, fynbos vegetation, and breathtaking views, every step is an immersion in the power of nature.

The wind blows strong, the waves crash against the rocks, and the panorama seems endless. It is an essential stop on any trip to Cape Town, both wild, grandiose, and inspiring. A place to experience fully, to feel the raw soul of the African continent.

4 - Practical tips for preparing for your trip to South Africa

When to go?

South Africa has opposite seasons to Canada.

  • May to September: this is the ideal time for safaris. The sparse vegetation makes it much easier to observe wildlife, and temperatures are pleasant, especially in the northern and eastern reserves.

  • November to March: these are the perfect months to enjoy the beaches, water sports, and long sunny days, especially in the Cape Town area and along the south coast.

  • September and October: these transitional months offer an excellent compromise, with mild weather and particularly active wildlife at the end of the dry season.

As the country has a wide variety of climates depending on the region (Indian Ocean to the east, Atlantic Ocean to the west, desert areas and mountains inland), it is advisable to adapt your itinerary according to the season you choose.

Essential formalities and preparations

Canadian citizens benefit from a simplified procedure for traveling to South Africa. No visa is required for tourist stays of less than 90 days; you simply need to present a passport that is valid for at least 30 days after your planned return date. Your passport must also have at least two blank pages for entry stamps. No specific vaccinations are required for travelers from Canada, but it is recommended that you check that your basic vaccinations are up to date before departure.

It is strongly recommended that you take out travel insurance to cover any medical expenses and repatriation. There are no direct flights to South Africa from Montreal: you will usually have to connect in Europe, the Middle East, or a major African city. Depending on your chosen itinerary, the total flight time varies between 16 and 20 hours on average.
